The premium class tap and die set 1900WW is made from high-quality tungsten steel, where tungsten is the main alloying element. Tungsten, a hard and dense metal, is added to steel to increase its strength, hardness, and wear resistance. As a result, tungsten steel is particularly valued in applications requiring durability and robustness.

Tungsten steel is most commonly used for cutting tools (e.g., drills, saw blades, and lathe bits), punches, and components of industrial machinery. It is also found in some military applications, such as armor-piercing projectiles, due to its density and strength.

Unlike rapidly wearing carbon steel, which is commonly used for taps and dies, tungsten steel offers significantly higher hardness and wear resistance because tungsten forms hard carbides within the steel matrix. Carbon steel can be hardened (especially high-carbon steel grades), but it cannot match the durability of tungsten steel under abrasive conditions or intensive use.
